MATT EICH — The Long Form Practice

MEMORY CULT Visiting Artist Series Presents

Matt Eich

Photographic essayist Matt Eich joins MEMORY CULT for a dialogue on building and sustaining a long-form photographic practice. Moving through personal work, assignments, teaching, family work, publishing, and the photo book, we consider what it means to let photographs develop over time—and to remain attentive to what the work is asking of you. The conversation explores photography as a lifelong practice with many destinations: one shaped by grit, failure, practice, changing circumstances, evolution of one’s voice and the willingness to keep returning.

Matt Eich is an American photographic essayist who was born in Richmond, Virginia and is the author of five books of photographs. He makes long-form photobook works, often connected to themes of memory, family, community, and the American condition.

Matt is an Associate Professor at Corcoran School of the Arts & Design at the George Washington University, contributes to publications including The Atlantic, The New York Times Magazine and others, creates commissioned work for a range of clients, and is the publisher of the independent imprint Little Oak.PRESS. He resides in Charlottesville, Virginia with his family.
