MEMORY CULT Visiting Artist Series Presents
David Campany
In this dialogue MEMORY CULT Founder Anastasia Pagonas is joined by David Campany: curator, writer, editor, educator and Creative Director of the International Center of Photography, New York. Our discussion covers forms within photographic culture, the possibility of artistic maturity and the uneasy relationship between artists and self-presentation. We question how photographers are expected to package themselves within contemporary culture and the growing pressure to become fluent in personal branding.
We explore the long life of photo books, the role of time and distance in shaping meaning, writing and the image, and the unconscious mind. We ask questions about wedding and family pictures, clichés of mother-child photography and the many ways photographers build lives around images. How do photographs travel through culture? What kind of audiences are available for photography? How do I sustain a lifelong, curious relationship to the image?
